I changed the toggle to be "below 768" instead of "below 1000".

toggle? That way we all get a (small or larger) share of the load.
If too many of us do not get a part of the load of the global pool
at all,
then the load on those that are in the global pool will go up
significantly.
That may make them leave, increasing the load on those who remain...
BTW do you have statistics on the number of DNS-queries for pool,
[012].pool, and ...<zone>.pool? Are the zones and numbers used much?
