We've tried various settings already. To make it better we need to use different DNS server software (I have several variations in use that would help). Maybe later in the spring or over the summer...

By the way, over the last few weeks I've been running a server in the pool.ntp.org zone constantly, and the load it is getting is rather modest (~150K*bit*, a little higher the last few days):
