All the spikes I've seen so far have been correlated with being in the
pool DNS.
Yes, all those abnormal spikes I've mentioned have been correlated with
being in the pool DNS. At the same time that period has always contained the
first minute of a hour. The load can sometimes be unexpectedly high (up to
1000rps), but only during a few seconds at the beginning of this first
minute.
Yeah, my only concern is that if the spikes from being in the pool
DNS becomes so large that it becomes a problem for a significant
number of pool servers. Kind of like trying to drink from a fire hose.
For a certain pool server this can probably happen only a few times a month
and the problem, if any, lasts a few seconds only. Moreover, all clients
running ntpd are protected against an anomalous reply from a single server.
