Is this a good long term strategy for the pool ?

I think it sounds interesting, at least. However, this is the wrong
forum.

Encouraging these features in ntpd needs to happen on
comp.protocols.time.ntp (or is there an ntpd list?).

Agreed, but I still found this thread interesting because it let pool admins (which are not ntpd algorithms specialists it seems, I am not anyway) express their needs and/or views.

Also, some redundancy is never bad, a.k. Suggesting new designs without even knowing what is going on at the moment in the lists dedicated to that. I have seen companies building more than two programs to fulfil the same task. This was done with different teams which did not communicate with each others, independently. In the end, the company would keep the best program and trash the others. (opens the door for the writing of a
ntpd like program from scratch, hehehe...)

I agree with you that it is time to move on elsewhere although.

As a conclusion for our little survey, I would say only 2 main ideas came up ( new DNS lookups, and spare servers ) and that both should be implemented judging by the views of the pool server admins on this list.

Now, lets all go see what they are actually doing in the dedicated lists for ntpd development ! ;-)
