While it looks like Dave has been with this project for a while, I am a newcomer and have had a similar problem. I added my UK server to the pool, a linux box running the bundled ntp-4.2.0. Every time my server was in the pool DNS ntpd would die without logging anything. Eventually I made a new rpm and upgraded to 4.2.4. This time ntp didn't die, but my firewall session table filled up, effectively causing a DOS on my network. I pulled my server from the pool while I looked for a solution. I have now changed the session aging settings on my firewall, in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the DOS, reduced my claimed bandwidth to keep out of the global zone and, thanks to this thread, implemented the poorly-documented kod and limit settings (can these be recommended, or at least suggested on the project webpage? They are not mentioned in any of the HOWTOs that I used when setting up ntp) I will try to re-enter the pool and see what happens.
