Proportional Allocation in the Electoral College

How Colorado could help John Kerry win
by Bruce Bartlett

"Still stung by George Bush's victory over Al Gore in the Electoral College four years ago, Democrats in Colorado have found a way to give John Kerry at least four electoral votes even if he loses the state's popular vote."

I happen to disagree with Bruce on this one. I think all states should have a proportional system of allocating their votes in the Electoral College. The purpose of the Electoral College when the Founding Fathers created it was to prevent the ignorant populace from screwing things up.

Now that we have a more educated populace, we don't need the Electoral College anymore. But we can't get rid of it without a Constitutional amendment. The system Colorado has put in place would give the common man more influence in picking the President if it were adopted nation wide.
