We haven't characterized the problem, but there have sometimes appeared to be conflicts with schedulers at the same time as updating. Perhaps somebody else has more insight into this. Anyway - if the update takes more than a couple of minutes, we abandon it and start again on a new database with the same data. Sometimes we can't drop the failed database immediately even after a server restart. We always can drop it by the next day so, again, we haven't investigated - we just try later.
