It's certainly difficult to diagnose such a problem without access to the 
system or some more complete information such as versions, error logs, full 
configuration scripts, etc.

I understand that you just don't have the time to set up such a system so... 
why not using an Ondemand installation (http://ondemand.openerp.com/). It will 
save your time and you won't have to worry about updates, etc.
