Considering your post, I check the files module_view.xml and module_workflow.xml. In the mrp module, the function trg_validate is called by the functions of the workflow activities themselves. In the hr_holiday module, the function trg_create is called in the _view.xml by a button of type object (usually of type workflow when related to a workflow). So this is porbably a second way of handling the workflow but I really do not understand why and what for...
