It's not just keeping traces. This data is used on the workflow processing. Of course, once the workflow has completed the information may be irrelevant but it is not while the workflow is alive.
I remember the topic you linked. I thought it got solved, but apparently it didn't. How many wkf do you have? Have you been updating the module and creating new workflows for the same object several times? Looking at the dates I'm thinking that maybe a post from Fabien relating the issues got deleted...
