This is an interesting, albeit somewhat philosophical, question/observation. I don't have the answers, but I do know that the Open ERP community is beginning to rally towards "scratching its own itch" by helping to fix this with Open ERP.
Maybe you'd be interested in reading http://www.openobject.com/forum/topic8503.html then joining the initiatives currently being led through that forum? I for one would love to see solid CRM functionality in Open ERP, and while that's a very big scope, solving direct email campaigns is a very good step forward.
