FYI that document is old and the AGI has changed since then.

There is the astman interface that uses some level of json/xml-rpc
that could be of help.  Ryan @ Digum is working on some updates right
now.  Pari and Brandon could likely answer your questions better.

I suggest you look at the Asterisk-GUI, mainly the call management and
transfer section.
