We have just started using OpenERP in our small organization and, yes, the learning curve to get started was very, very steep (though much of this was due to not having prior accounting/ERP experience).
So far we've been able to accomplish everything we've wanted to do but it takes a lot of configuring/learning to do so. I don't see any problem with the account numbers/codes.
