In our production system (v.5), we had a problem, that despite partner language is set and supported language is installed, some variables was not translated despite existing translation strings. Further investigation revealed, that some strings are taken from GTK client settings and overrided partner's LANG enviromental variable. This is default OpenERP behavior, but in practice this is not acceptable. We had invoice for english customer in english, but with Latvian locale date and time settings and vice versa and not translated UOM in invoices etc., because some users wanted to use English GTK interface not Latvian and vice versa for Latvian customers.
That's why we introduced gettext function in our report_openoffice module. Using this function is possible to translate particular odt/pdf report in multilanguages- just encode in report that it is translatable and then enter translated strings into OpenERP database.
