Hi, i don't know about this particular problem but i can successfully use mkII with AVaRICE here are some notes : http://planete.inrialpes.fr/~francill/stuff/AvrJtagIce.pdf also maybe you need tu update avarice it's from " Aug 25 2003" ... i had success using the usb port of mkII hope this helps ...
