Use 2 1.5V batteries instead, if possible. Certain operations (on tmote sky at least) require 2.7V, for instance reprogramming from flash (eg: Deluge). But for other operations 1.2V batteries should work fine (again assuming similarity to Tmote Sky). Check the Power section of your mote's data sheet for more information.
