Have you disconnected the mote from the battery? The correct arrangement is
as follows:

Let the
battery (power supply) terminals be "A" and "B"
resistor terminals be "C" and "D"
mote terminals be "E" and "F".

Usually the battery and the mote would be connected: i.e., "A" is connected
to "E" and "B" is connected to "F".

Break the connection. In mica motes, the battery (box) is soldered on the
PCB. You need to remove the solders and take the battery box out.
Alternately (if you are not in a destructive mood), do not put any batteries
in the battery box that is connected to mica mote. Instead, use a separate
battery box and connect it to the mote's power supply pins using wires.

Now attach "A" to "C", "D" to "E" and "F" to "B".

Now place turn on the mote and connect your multimeter probes (in voltage
reading mode) to points "C" and "D".

Of course the description above can be paraphrased as "put the resistor in
series".
