Most probably the name of the package what you need to compile avrdude with USB 
support is called libusb-dev. Do you have that one installed?

Yes, you're right. The former one contains a patch to support the MIB510 and 
MIB520 programming boards to program mica* and iris motes. Unfortunately, it is 
built without usb support. I will contact Kevin to rebuild it.
