Oh, the Iris doesn't have USB on board, does it? It's connected to a USB
programming board? Then, the easiest way to check is to plug the
programming board in (or out), and see which port numbers (dis)appear.
IIRC, the programmer itself is the lower port number, and the higher one
connects to the node, but I may be mistaken.

 

If you have multiple programmers connected to your PC, there's really no
way to identify on which ones there is a mote, unless you can make the
mote send some kind of message that indicates its presence. For example,
most of our gateways are programmed to respond to an "identify" command,
and reply with their software version, but that's built into the
application.

FYI , using grep just filters that noise ,, but i mean to say the whole
output of dmesg  doesn specifically say to which port is my present
single iris is put on  ..

using dmesg dumps in a load of info of the whole system ports ... i cant
make out the result of that command ,, can u suggest anything

Yes, it is a known problem. I use Ubuntu and TinyOS 2.1.0 with an Iris
Mote and motelist doesn't work. However you can use the linux command:
dmesg.
