The claim that these organizations use no animals in research surprised me
too.  Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center does no animal research???  (but see
below)

But there is a way that business companies can get around this.  They can
claim not to do any animal research if:
1) the company itself owns no laboratories where animal research is
conducted, 
2) the company pays contract laboratories to do their animal research for
them


As for Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, a quick Medline search turned up
hundreds of papers such as these (and I've underlined the animal in the
title, because the title is about all I can understand of these!):
