>Are You Giving Money to Undermine Medical Research?

>PETA has posted a "do not give" list posted on its web site with more
>than 80 medical research and patient assistance organizations
>(www.peta.org/mall/cc/ccchartest.html). The list includes the Red
>Cross, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's
>Research Hospital, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Shriners
>Hospitals for Crippled Children and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
>Foundation. Noting that health charities "do have relevant and effective
>projects that help improve lives," PETA asserts that agencies sponsoring
>animal research "drain money away from these projects and into cruel
>experiments on animals" and that these research projects "have no
>practical benefit to anyone."

This list and my investigation on the PETA site of all the organizations
that do use animal testing, led me to wonder if there are any well-known
research organizations that do not use animal testing. I was surprised,
through a link of the PETA site (to the United Cancer Research Society
http://www.unitedcancer.org/message.shtml), to find the following listed as
pledging to do no animal research. It is claimed that the following
organizations "adhere to the strictest guidelines, including no research
involving animals or animal products." Some of these are obviously not
primarily research organizations but it was difficult for me to believe that
many of these do no animal research.
