My 2 cents. This was totally inappropriate and an abuse of position. I hope the prof was severly reprimanded. Some arrogant people amaze me. Like that guy a few years back who told all the female students to cross their legs,and then announced, "Now that the gates of hell are closed, we may begin class." I always suspect that these people have serious personal problems.
I hear all kinds of nonsensical (to me) stuff, especially in freshman classes. Many proclamations come from media fairy tales like "In search of", "Clark's world of mystery", etc. Many students see sci-fi as prophesy shows (warp drive, etc.). IMHO, its our job to *gently* ask them to consider more parsimonious explanations for certain phenomena, not beat them with an academic stick.
