Actually, My institution requires that I maintain information for one year (minimum).
But, I still have some things from the last couple of years (call me a pack rat!). As long as I have room, it's no sweat to keep it. I just box stuff up in expanding folders per class, box them up and store them. I've had the occasional student approach me or challenge grades up to two years later. Imagine their surprise (good and bad) when I've still had it! I've been able to produce tests or emails to/from students from 1999. Some of my students have not picked up their corrected tests and other papers. They are usually the students who were absent from class the day they were returnded. Despite my several notifications they are still in my office taking up valuable space. Is there a rule as to how long a prof should keep a corrected student's paper? I was once told that all students work should be kept on file through the midterm of the following semester. Feedback requested.
