The most unusual grading method I have experienced was as a student. The class was
Artificial Intelligence. We had one required text and two supplementary books
although no readings were ever specifically assigned. At the end of the course, the
professor announced that he would give everyone B's unless we came to him and told him
we thought we should get a different grade. (Have I mentioned the school had a strong
honor code and that take-home exams were the norm?) I went to ask for an A, expecting
to have to present my reasons but he didn't wait to hear them, just said fine.

Rumor has it, however, that there was one student some years before, who almost never
went to class and of course probably didn't do any of the reading or anything. At the
end of the course he went to the prof and requested an A. The prof's response was,
All right, I'll give you the A. But you are a bastard, and don't you ever forget that
I told you you were a bastard.
