Our story so far: I innocently posted a url for an article
discussing the above. Nancy Melucci livened things up by
declaring:
>
> > it also pains me that this article was published in a magazine that
> > features special report articles on why the wage gap between men and
> > women does not REALLY exist (featuring ONLY verbal arguments, no
> > figures or charts or data of any kind).

and David Epstein informed us that:
>
> It took only about ten seconds of Web searching to learn that the
> innocuously named _Women's Quarterly_ is a mouthpiece for the
> hiliariously named Independent Women's Forum--read all about 'em at
>
> http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A25123-2001Apr30

Well, I suppose it wouldn't do any good to suggest that, whatever
the organization or the journal that prints it, that the article
be considered on its merits. And, unaccustomed as I am to being
identified with conservative causes (especially those in the
Excited States), I find myself in considerable agreement with
what else is in that revealing Washington Post article. My guess
is that the group isn't really traditional conservative but a
coalition against radical (that is, man-hating or gender)
feminism. Note the reluctance to take a stand on abortion, and
the absence of a belief that women's place is in the home or
submissive to their husbands.

I did, in fact, briefly check out who was behind the web site
before I posted, and was encouraged to find the name of Christina
Hoff Sommers prominently displayed as the chair of its national
advisory board. I now see that Judith Kleinfeld is also on the
list, another whose work I've long admired.

So I'm not particularly bothered by the fact that this essay was
published by those people. Gee, I even read stuff published by
the American Psychological Association, and you know what _those_
people stand for.
