I usually start with some hands-on activities regarding the field of
psychology as most students arrive thinking psychology is all about clinical
practice. we discuss the various branches, what they do, etc. i do some
misconceptions quizzes (e.g. true or false, hitting a pillow or a stuffed
animal will help alleviate anger and is effective in reducing the probability
of aggression in the future...). I spend the first 2 periods getting to know
the students and how much they know already, misconceptions, questions they
have, what they want to learn about, etc. I then pretty much follow the order
of your typical general psych. book (start with history of psych, theories,
research methods). I spend a lot more time on topics they find of great
interest, such as abnormal psychology, learning and memory (lots of fun
activities for conditioning, memory, etc.), and less on fields I know less
about, such as health psychology.
