Sports teams provide an anchoring sense of belonging to one's community--starts with local community youth teams and goes on up. Is also true for other things besides sports: scouting, church membership, Philharmonic Orchestras, theaters, membership in local zoological society, etc. etc. I believe it is just an extension of these things.
