After the recent posts about unsolicited email (Spam), I thought some Tipsters might find the following interesting.
MORE E-MAIL USERS TAKE SPAMMERS TO COURT More e-mail users are filing lawsuits against spammers. Junk e-mail is an expensive and increasing nuisance, and so far 19 states have passed laws against spam. The laws require purveyors of junk e-mails to place labels in subject lines--or provide the option to recipients of being taken off a marketer's future mailings--and they prohibit false headers on messages. Although the laws do not prohibit unsolicited e-mail outright, recipients can generally find violations in many of the messages they receive. Since the mid 1990s, Internet service providers such as EarthLink and America Online have been awarded millions of dollars in judgments and settlements against spammers based on computer fraud, trespass, and other laws. Spam hits are continuing to increase despite anti-spam legislation: Brightmail noted almost 2 million spam attacks last December. (Associated Press, 12 January 2002) Have a great spring.
