Thank you ALL for responding to my 'maybe not so embarrassing statistical question'.  I'm pretty sure that I have seen the method used in Lehman's text in another Statistics textbook and remember it, based on John's description, to be much easier and pretty straight forward.  I may very well use that approach in the future.

I do feel, however, that percentiles, percentile ranks, grouped distributions, etc., merit adequate coverage.  One of the most popular areas of graduate study for our students is school psychology and my understanding is that these issues receive considerable coverage in those programs, including our own at St. John's.
