Please read the information below regarding the American Journal of
Undergraduate Research. I believe that this
represents a wonderful oppportunity for our undergraduate students
involved in research to publish their work!

I look forward to your response!

Call for papers and for referees: The American Journal of Undergraduate
Research

The American Journal of Undergraduate Research (AJUR) is a new quarterly
journal designed as a place for
undergraduates in all areas of science, math and technology to publish
their research. It is expected that the lead author be an
undergraduate at the time the work was completed although all authors do
not need to be undergraduates. Empirical studies in
all areas of psychology will be considered for publication. It is
expected that at least one article from the discipline be included
each year, although certainly more will be welcomed. If you have
students who have completed a research project, please
urge them to consider publishing their work in AJUR. A submission to
AJUR will provide an undergraduate with the
experience of all aspects of publishing their work beginning with the
original submission of the manuscript, a review by
professionals and academics working in their area, and revision and
preparation of the final manuscript. All authors will receive
a free copy of the issue of AJUR in which they publish. As this is a
new journal with its first issue slated to be published June
1, 2002 there are no sample articles.

Paper guidelines:

1. Articles should be fairly short (12 pages excluding references),
although longer papers will be considered. It is expected that
a paper be comprised of a single study rather than multiple experiments.

2. Replications will be considered for publication, although preference
will be for original research.
3. Figures need to be gray scale or black and white, and preferably
electronic versions of all figures should accompany the
paper. Please limit the use of figures and tables to when they are
absolutely necessary.
4. American Psychological Association guidelines for ethical treatment
of human and animal subjects must be followed for all
research. A statement to that effect must be included in the submission
letter. (please see APAs website for this information).
5. APA style must be followed.

The following must be included with all submissions:

1. A printed copy of the paper. Please do not include authors names on
the paper other than on the title page.
2. An indication of what area of psychology the research best fits (eg
developmental psychology, social psychology, learning,
biopsychology).
3. Names of potential reviewers if any.
4. An electronic copy of the paper, either as an e-mail attachment or as
a diskette enclosed with the printed paper. Be sure that
the disk is clearly labeled with the lead authors name and the title of
the submission.
5. A letter of submission providing the following information:
a. Names and addresses for all authors. Be sure to choose an address
that will be valid for at least 3-5 weeks following
submission of the paper. (For example, papers submitted at the end of
the academic year should include the summer address).

b. A valid e-mail address for all authors
c. An indication of the person to whom correspondence should be
addressed (as the mission of the AJUR is to provide the
students with the experience of publishing their work from start to
finish, the lead student author should be the corresponding
author).
d. A list of the number of pages, figures and tables

Submissions can be sent either to:

Review Guidelines:

I expect that as I become more familiar with the work being submitted by
psychology students, these guidelines will evolve.
However, as a starting point, reviews of articles should focus on the
following:

1. Is the paper clearly written?
2. Is the purpose of the research clear?
3. Are the research conclusions justified? Please remember that this is
an outlet for undergraduate research. As the authors
may not be able to revisit the study, recommending subsequent studies or
modification to the design prior to publication will be
problematic. Instead, focus on whether the conclusions can be limited
so that they are justified.
4. Does the paper follow APA style?
5. Should the paper be published? If you believe that the paper should
be published with revisions, please provide guidelines
for the revisions. Again, remember that this is a learning process for
the students who are submitting their work, be as specific
as possible with comments and suggestions.

Call for referees

Referees are needed to serve as reviewers for psychology papers
submitted to AJUR. Referees agree to review at least one
article a year. If you agree to review a particular article, a two week
turn around is requested. Each submitted article will have
two referees.

Referees will receive papers electronically as attachments to e-mails.
It is my preference that reviews also be returned to me as
attachments to e-mails so that we can rapidly notify authors of
editorial decisions.

All reviews will be anonymous to the authors.

All reviewers will receive a free copy of AJUR, and will be listed in
the final issue of the year.

As this journal serves a pedagogical purpose, I would also encourage
graduate students to provide reviews of articles. This is
an excellent opportunity for them to begin to be involved in the review
part of peer review! If you have graduate students who
would like to review, please encourage them to contact me as well.

If you are willing to serve as a reviewer, please respond to me
separately from the list. I need the following information:

Name
e-mail and snail mail address
general area(s) for which you can review. As this is a journal for
undergraduates, try to be as broad as possible with regard to
what you can review.

I hope that psychology will be well represented in AJUR, and am looking
forward to your students papers and to your
reviews.
