As Karl says, these are not equal intervals. In adidtion, this scale 
would be questioned by a critical reviewer of any research 
proposal. 

1. "Average" is a relative concept and the other terms are absolute.
2. If you have very poor and poor, you should probably have good 
and very good. There is a huge jump between good and excellent.
3. I have no problem with unequal number of rating points on the 
good and poor side, because most skaters will be very good (i/e/, 
distributions will be negatively skewed with equal numbers of 
positive and negative ratings). So you might argue for even more on 
the positive side.

What about this as a better scale?

0 = not skated
1 = very poor
2 = poor
3 = adequate
4 = good
5 = very good
6 = excellent
7 = perfect
