One option would be to use your stats programs, assuming they are flexible enough. In SPSS, for example, one can read the raw data and then use RECODE to reverse the scoring of negative items, COMPUTE statements to calculate totals or means across specified items, and so on. You would also have direct access to CORRELATION for split-half and even RELIABILITY for Cronbach's alpha. If students already use some stats package for the class, then this would simply be an extension of that use. I think it also promotes good research habits, in that students learn to enter raw data so that reliabilities and related statistics can be calculated, and so that they have considerable flexibility in the scoring.
