Dap, hello -
I saw your posts on TIPS -- didn't think I had anything useful to say about
your problems, which I imagine are fairly universal in academic
departments. I did have a passing thought, when I read the part about
everybody thinking that he or she is the hardest worker. It's common,
apparently, among practicing lawyers (my wife was in practice for a few
years) to keep a log, down to half-hour or even 15 minute intervals, of
what work was done. Somebody adds it all up when a bill is sent to the
client. You might ask your academics to do the same -- they will hate the
idea, I imagine -- I certainly would -- but at the very least it would
serve to show how difficult it is to create an operational definition of
"hard work."
Additional mischief, or perhaps this is better sense than I have
thought through: you could have people submit (open or sealed) bids for the
available jobs. I think our department did something like that, but only
for the unpopular "committee" jobs. (If you didn't bid, it meant getting
assigned to whatever was left over when everybody else had chosen.)
Best,
David
