As I understand it, the answer to #2 is yes. Contrary to popular misconceptions, sleepwalking is a slow wave sleep phenomenon. One cannot sleep walk under normal circumstances in REM because of the paralysis that occurs in healthy people during that state.

I have heard a recent interesting speculation that sleepwalking is a hold-over of unihemispheric sleep - anyone know more about this?

Sleepwalking is not unusual in children. It is not dangerous in and of itself, but sleepwalkers should be put back to bed as they can have accidents. Waking them up to do this is also not dangerous.
