Both of Nancy's suggestions (reduced circulation and compressed nerves) for the cause of paresthesia may be correct.  Carpal tunnel produces pins and needles sensations via compression of the medial nerve, for example.  For a simple answer, point the curious student to http://www.msnbc.com/news/247963.asp.
