If there is one area that the claim is at all accurate, it's in violence (also the only area of media that has been demonstrated by research to actually HAVE a negative effect on the long term behavior and attitudes of people and the one that the media are least interested in eliminating, as it provides most of their income). Today's media (and culture) are _vastly_ more violent than earlier ones. Domestic violence is at an all time high, and "Macho" is very definitely "in" with the violent characteristics usually associated with it. Even there, however, is the problem really the material kids are exposed to? BUT: Reporting of domestic violence is at an all time hime (probably). But so much violence went unreporting the in unlamented good old days that I really wonder. I also wonder how violent and macho the average youth of today really is. My own perspective is different than most Tipsters, I imagine, I grew up in an inner city neighborhood in New Jersey with gangs and violence was fairly common. Back in those days (the 50s) you learned to evaluate very quickly whether someone else was a threat or not. You also learned a few rather nasty ways of handling yourself mostly involving getting in the first shot. The vast majority of my students who talk the talk could never walk the walk.I often chortle to myself when I hear their braggadocio. By the way, none of my homies were ever exposed to television violence, since TVs didn't become common in my neighborhood until the end of the 50s. I am skeptical the the media in any form has any lasting influence on most of us even as children. It may shape the form of the behavior but not the content. As far as lasciviousness of dress, what ever happened to see through tops worn bra less and the tight pants for men that I can no longer get into? Super baggie pants or peg 14 black slacks. F(** me heels or Doc Martins for women. Doc Martins are lascivious? Your mother wears Army boots to bed!
