The problem is with "couples who engaged in" which implies a mutual 
decision.   Would "Couples who engaged in date rape?" be 
acceptable?  Obviously not (at least I hope not...) yet date rape is a 
subset of male-to-female aggression.

Why not "Couples in which male-to-female aggression occurred..."
