It actually enourages grade inflation.  The range of values for "A" gets smaller,
but teachers have a tendency to see that the same group passes the new "94"
threshold that would have passed the "90" threshold.

Our university standards are 90, 80, 70,  but some programs go for 94 etc.  It is
obvious to most that the "higher standards" are for appearances only.
