What if you stated that exam 5 (or the final or whatever) was mandatory,
and that if a student had taken all five, the lowest would be dropped. If
any exam had been missed, that would be the one dropped. This would still
leave the option that a student with As on exams 1-4 could show up for exam
5, put his or her name on it and turn in a blank exam. If a student makes
that choice, that would be acceptable.
