        We know an older middle-aged couple who are friends-of-a-friend
and probably could be used as a case study in "technology addiction."

        They have a home in the country with two computer
systems--placed a few feet apart where they can clearly see and hear
each other. Despite this, they not only communicate by IM, they do so
using Webcam's as well!

        Incidentally, the same couple have a modern A/V system with a
32" TV, DirecTV (with all the movie channels), a surround sound system,
etc.

        They _don't_, however, have indoor plumbing (the outhouse is a
couple hundred yards from the house--which HAS to be inconvenient,
particularly in a Michigan winter) and they bathe in a large tub that
they heat the water for on the stove!

        Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . .
