There is a show called "Jackass" on MTV, and it in no way encourages kids to make tapes and submit them.  It's made up of stunts performed by the show's staff.  In fact, there is a warning on screen (that plays at the beginning and every return from commercial break) that specifically discourages people from replicating the segments of the show and warns that no submissions will be accepted or even reviewed.

Teaching high school comes in handy sometimes.

Is there really such a show? It certainly sounds like a
surefire lawsuit.

The show (according to my 18yo son, who watches a "bit" more MTV
than I do :-), is called "Jackass," and it presents home videos of
"pranks" played on others (some of which are assaultive in nature and
all of which focus on strangers). I haven't seen it, but I have had
people tell me that the same kinds of assaults kids are being charged
with are among the tapes they select as winners.

Actually, this is one of those cases where our students probably
know more about the subject (MTV) than we do (Michael Sylvester probably
excepted, since he's involved in music) and could easily provide a great
"spring board" for discussions on the influence of media on behavior.
