Although I rarely post messages to TIPS, I do read them, and I know what a
wealth of information members can provide. I would no like to ask you to
provide me with some help.
I will be attending "Teaching Camp" this summer, where faculty from all
over the university get to gether for 4 days, centered around teaching, and
improving teaching. I have been asked to be facilitator (1 of 2) in a
session with the title "Problem Students and Student Problems." If you have
any "stories" about either of those topics, I would appreciate hearing
about them so that I might use some as examples or starters for discussion.
Here are some questions which may give you some ideas:
Problem Students
What types of problems have you encountered, and how have you
attempted to deal with them? Were you interventions successful?
Some examples of possible types of problems include:
Disruptive, loud, annoying, or other disrespectful behavior
inclass. (This category may include talking on cell phones, etc.)
One or two students continually monoplizing discussion.
Very shy or reticent students not contributing to class discussion.
Non-class members attending class and being disruptive.
Student Problems
What student problems have you had to deal with which may have
affected attendance, class performance, or ability to function as a
student. How have you dealt with these problems? Did you refer the student
to other professionals? Were the interventions effective?
Some examples:
Death or other major catastrophe in the immediate family or of
close friend.
Rape, abuse, or other threatening situations.
Sickness, illness, or accident affecting the student.
Working 40 or more hours per week.
Financial aid or financial problems.
Drug, alcohol or other substance use/abuse problems.
PLEASE RESPOND PRIVATELY TO ME. I WILL SUMMARIZE AND SEND A SUMMARY TO THE
LIST.
Also, if anyone would like, I will summarize the session and post that
summary to the list.
