Hi Michael:

When students come to me in similar situations I tell them we have more tests 
and that dwelling on the past will only interfere with their ability to move 
forward. I do go over their exam and we talk about some study habits, test 
taking strategies and test anxiety management procedures that might ensure 
better performance the next time. 

But this early in the semester there should be more opportunities to bring up 
the grade and I would stick with whatever policy you have in place.
