My research methods course involves independent data collection.
I devote portions of a couple of lectures to emphasize that my
issue is that students devise a valid test of an existing
hypothesis and report their work in a comprehensible fasion. But
I am neutral, and they should be also, as to whether the results
support the experimental hypothesis or not.

Usually, I hear a couple of sighs of relief when they hear that
the emphasis is on the quality of the investigation and not a
specific outcome.
