These rules are not so old. When my mother began teaching in the 1940's, women who got married immediately lost their teaching jobs. She tells of spending the honeymoon night with her friend who was just married to help the couple hide the marriage till the end of the term. Even when I was in elementary school (1960's), teachers were not to be seen in local bars without threat of unemployment.
