The suggestion that textbook cover art is a subject worthy of examination is an interesting one, but it should be extended to the general question of text art. I have been struck in recent years by the number of illustrations that seem marginally related to the subject matter and are presumably intended to sell rather than to educate. Since I teach in a school whose students tend to come from more conservative backgrounds I am perhaps especially sensitive to illustrations that they find culturally offensive. I have on several occasions rejected texts that I otherwise would have chosen because of the unnecessarily provocative illustrations.
