I have a similar question with unique needs: I need a cogntion text that doesn't cover a lot of memory. I find myself in conflict with my department's Learning and Memory course that covers a lot of human memory. I currently use Ashcraft, and have used Solso in the past- authors who do memory research themselves- but need to find something less memory oriented (is that possible?).
Are there cognition texts by non-memory people or that emphasize less memory? (as a student of memory I find even asking this question painful!)
