I've been using Sternberg's text for five years, and I find that the students don't care for it. Of course, they have no point of reference. I think it integrates neuroscience well, and it tries to include material and questions that tap into creative and practical as well as analytic intelligence. I think it could do a better job of flagging and defining key concepts - right now some are flagged but others are embedded in the text without a clear definition. The newest edition has some nice sidebars that give a close-up on research that's going on it the labs of people who are cited in the text.
I intend to switch when I get the chance to review some alternatives. In particular, I'd like to find a textbook that focuses on the higher-order cognitive functions. I'd like to hear more about the text by Mayer that Christopher mentioned.
