TEN YEARS? Dear God. Every text I used this year was 2002. One argument you might use is that, as a rule of thumb, most research papers are considered unacceptable if their citations refer to a source older than 10 years, unless the source is a classic like Freud, Milgram, etc.
If they're ten years old, there'd be nothing in them about Judith Rich Harris' "nurture assumption," little or nothing about Elizabeth Loftus' work with "recovered memory," no findings about gender differences in cognitive processing, nothing about the ADHD controversy - come on fellow TIPSpersons, help me out here. (It's too early in the morning to come up with as convincing a list as Paul needs...) We have had a discussion on TIPS in the past of whether or not it is worthwhile to continue to choose newest editions for our classes. The downside, of course, is that students aren't as likely to get the financial plus of being able to buy used books, and there's usually not too much difference between editions in such a year or two. The plus side is more obvious: You get the newest ideas and concepts. Once, a few years ago, I stayed with an older "chestnut" for Psych. of Women that I'd really liked. It was three years old and at that time there wasn't a newer edition. Several students complained that it was "too old" and therefore not current. And they were right, because at least one reference (to "huevodoces" and their acceptance or lack of it in their own villages) had been found to be inaccurate and I had to point that out when we covered the topic. Your signature doesn't say at what level you're teaching, but I'm assuming it's high school. If you do succeed at convincing them, I'd suggest that you look into donating the used textbooks to one of the national organizations that collects them and sends them to Third World countries, where they're hungry for even ten-year-old texts.
