One argument you might use is that, as a rule of thumb, most research papers are considered unacceptable if their citations refer to a source older than 10 years, unless the source is a classic like Freud, Milgram, etc. I've heard this rule of thumb before, and I'm wondering where it came from and why. I cite things more than ten years old all the time, and just about every research paper I read does the same. Lots of relevant (and non-classic) research is more than ten years old. I'd be curious as to how many TIPSters use this rule in their research methods classes.
